Norovirus, though occasionally referred to as the stomach flu, is unrelated to the influenza virus. It appears to be at a seasonal high and contains symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. A person just needs a small number of virus particles to become ill, and they can easily spread via hands, surfaces, food, and drink. Even after feeling better, an infected individual can continue to spread the infection for up to two weeks.
At the end of the last week, the average over the previous three weeks of the number of positive norovirus tests had surpassed 15%. Since late March 2022, that value has been the highest ever recorded. The Covid-19 pandemic prevention efforts were probably successful in suppressing the norovirus outbreaks. The outbreaks have increased to pre-pandemic levels as the limitations placed during the pandemic have lessened.
