Covid Can Cause Damage to Heart

How Covid Can Hurt the Heart

It was discovered that Covid can result in long-lasting heart issues. The effects of Covid on the heart have long been known, but a recent investigation focused on the alleged microscopic alterations brought on by the virus. According to preliminary study, Covid can harm the heart's cells and result in long-term issues like irregular heartbeats and heart failure. When Columbia University in New York City looked at autopsied heart tissue from Covid patients, they discovered that the infection had harmed the way the cells in the heart controlled calcium levels, a mineral that is crucial for the heart's ability to contract and circulate blood throughout the body. In another section of the investigation, mice with Covid showed the same harm.

An individual with Covid will experience a significant inflammatory reaction from their immune system in an effort to combat the virus. According to the new research, this inflammation alters how calcium is stored in the heart. Important messengers that control heart function, including the rate and power of the organ's contraction, are calcium ions, a positive-charged form of the element. When the body requires them, these ions are ready to go because they are kept inside cells. The precise quantity of calcium can exit because they are released through channels in the cellular membrane. Dr. Andrew Marks, a cardiologist and professor of biophysics at Columbia University who co-led the research, said that the damage brought on by inflammation during a Covid infection "appears to prop these channels open, allowing too much calcium leak from the cells of the heart." He claimed that this calcium overflow can impair cardiac function and even result in deadly arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. The research only examined heart tissue from autopsies performed before vaccines were available, despite the fact that inflammation of the heart is a rare but well-documented side effect of the mRNA Covid vaccines.
